Review of 'close' by David Wheeler in Hortus No. 88.
"I especially like the photographs of Jim Buchanan's ephemeral labyrinths - ephemeral, for they are washed away by the next incoming tide - 'etched' into the dry sand were the River Nith meets the sea in Dumfries and Galloway…
…My favourite? I think I could spend a happy day at Mary Ann Crichton Maitland's garden at Daluaine, Aberdeenshire: it looks relaxed, totally unpretentious and thoroughly loved."

The Scotsman review of 'close: a journey in Scotland'
'I'd also suggest one of my favourite books of this year – Close: A Journey In Scotland (Northfield, £19.99), photographer Allan Pollok-Morris's love letter to landscape art in Scotland, from unusual gardens like Little Sparta and the Hidden Gardens at Tramway in Glasgow, to work by artists such as Andy Goldsworthy and Jim Buchanan. It's a beautiful book that captures both the wildness and tranquility of this country.'

Sunday Times Review by Rachael Devine of 'close: a journey in Scotland':
In Allan Pollok-Morris’s collection of photographs of notable Scottish gardens, there is a sense of grand endeavor that stands out on every page like a lily in a bouquet of ragweed.

'close: a journey in Scotland' reviewed in the Independent by Anna Pavord.
'My final Christmas book, Close (Northfield Print, £19.99), is by a young photographer, Allan Pollock Morris, and documents work by contemporary landscapers and gardeners that he came across on a journey from south to north through his native Scotland. Andy Goldsworthy is there of course with his superbly enigmatic cairns, but so are lesser known figures: labyrinth-maker Jim Buchanan, letter-boxer Alec Finlay, Rolf Roscher and Chris Rankin's hidden miniature landscapes in Glasgow. Though I go there every year, I'm an interloper in Scotland, but this beautifully made book made me feel as homesick as if it were my own country too.'

'close: a journey in Scotland' reviewed in The Telegraph by Tim Richardson.
'One has the sense that really good garden photographers are born, not made, and that sometimes a photographer might not find this out for a little while. This seems to be the case with Allan Pollok-Morris, who in 2004 – when he was then in his early thirties – was commissioned to take photographs for the exhibition now on at Edinburgh's Royal Botanic Garden (it closes on January 11). This is the book of the exhibition and it is a fine artefact in its own right, boasting first-class colour reproduction and printing which puts many of the efforts of more established publishers to shame (most have switched to the Far East to save money). The highlight for many readers will be the images of Ian Hamilton Finlay's Little Sparta, the garden with which Pollok-Morris began his odyssey around 24 others in Scotland. But there are various other glories here, not least Cambo House, Fife, which appears at the point of the book where it always seems to fall open, with three luscious double-page spreads of the plantings of owner Catherine Erskine and gardener Elliott Forsyth. He also has a genius for portraying people. For a picture gallery from the book, see www.telegraph.co.uk/gardening'
